This certification program is designed to increase and test the knowledge of students who are proficient at the basics of medical coding, anatomy and medical terminology. As medical practices face greater scrutiny from third-party auditors and higher expenses, they are looking to employ coders who have advanced knowledge of coding. Understandably, certification has often become mandated for practice compliance plans, hiring and advancement opportunities.

Students who want to become certified as a Registered Medical Coder can take one of two paths: Test + Training or Test only. However, we recommend all students complete the self-directed RMC Certification Program Courses, as the testing is comprehensive and quite challenging.

Option 1: Test and Training

Inexperienced coders who have completed the RMC-A pre-certification program must complete the self-directed RMC Certification Program Courses (total of
6 hours of CEU) prior to registering for the RMC Certification Exam.

Option 2: Test Only

Experienced coders who have a high-level of knowledge of CPT®, ICD-9-CM, and HCPCSII coding, Evaluation and Management coding and auditing, and Medicare Part B billing regulations may register for the RMC Certification Exam without completing the RMC Certification Program Courses. We recommend this pathway for only those individuals who already hold certifications that test the areas of coding covered in this course.

We find students, regardless of their experience level, who complete the self-directed RMC Certification Program Course are much more likely to pass the RMC Certification Exam.

Individuals who pass the RMC Certification Exam become a Registered Medical Coder (RMC) for one year. To retain the RMC Certification, the individual must be a member of the ARHCP, obtain twelve (12) Continuing Education Credits, and pass a small re-certification exam.
