Medical Transcription Made Easy Program Materials In addition to the actual course itself, you will require some additional materials. Some courses offered on the Internet already include all the materials you need. Unfortunately, these are often the items that drive up the cost of a simple medical transcription course. One of the reasons Medword likes this course, and recommends it, is because the student is not forced to buy a course with either inferior required materials or overpriced required materials. Medword is of the opinion that by giving the student the opportunity to source these required materials themselves, they are much more likely to keep down the overall costs of the course and required materials dramatically. For instance, if you order the course with the practice dictation on CD (Option A), you will have to have a special digital software program and foot pedal with a proper headset. (Medword recommends the best digital software & foot pedal combination on the market today, the authentic WAVpedal system. Please click here for details. We also recommend the Spectra Stethoscope-style headset with extra-long 10-foot cord which may be reviewed here. Or, If you order the practice dictation on cassette tapes (Option B), you will have to have a standard transcriber machine with a foot pedal, again with a proper headset.Medword recommends you review the transcriber machine we offer through our status as an Amazon.com affiliate. There may also be the very same, but less expensive, used or refurbished machines for sale. Please click here for a link to the transcriber. Please note: More and more dictation is being done in digital format rather than tape recording medium. Unless you already know that you will be having to transcribe from dictation on tapes, we recommend strongly that you consider the digital system and order the course that comes with the practice dictation on CD. The "hardware" noted above is separate from the cost of course enrollment. Since they are through another Medword supplier, you would pay for the course first, then pay for the WAVpedal foot pedal and software system, stereo headset, or transcriber machine after.
The only other required item you will have to purchase is a good medical dictionary. There are many medical dictionaries on the market, but the author of the course recommends one of the most popular dictionaries among professional medical transcriptionists. It is called "Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary," by F.A. Davis. Dorland's Medical Dictionary, illustrated, preferably, but is available in a non-illustrated verion, is also a great second dictionary. These may be purchased new or used through Medword's affiliation with Amazon.com. You may also want to have a spell checker that installs as a program on your computer and, when you're spell-checking your transcription, it will find errors in medical terminology. Most normal spell checkers cannot do this. It would have to be a medical spell checker. Medword recommends the Spellex Medical Spell Checker found here, or in one of the sections below. Here are some links to other materials that will help you during your course, but are not required. Of course, the investment you make in any of these products will be best realized once you are working as a medical transcriptionist.
