Definition of Body Mass Index

The Body Mass Index is used to define nutritional status and is derived from the formula: weight(kg)/height(m)2. The standards are the same for men and women.

• BMI of 20-25 - Acceptable
• BMI of 30 and above - Obese
• BMI of 40 and above - Grossly obese
• BMI of 18-20 - Mild starvation
• BMI of 16 or below - Severe starvation
